Big Bend

I asked my son to share his experiences from a camping trip we took to Big Bend National Park this spring…

We went to Big Bend national park with two other families from March 28th to March 31st.

March 28th

The first day we left straight from school and started driving to Big Bend. It was a really long drive so we stopped at the Holiday Inn in Marfa for a night. When we got there we realized our cooler faucet was open during the drive and it got one of our bags all wet. When we got to the hotel the room we reserved was given to someone else so we got a different room. It was fine but we had to wait a little while and it was already around 10:00. When we got to our room everyone was exhausted and we all went straight to bed.

March 29th

When we woke up we showered and went downstairs to get breakfast at the hotel’s buffet. There was lots of great food like pancakes, cinnamon rolls, omelets, fruit, yogurt, and hard boiled eggs. After we ate, we loaded up our cars and started driving to Big Bend. When we got to the gates we took a picture in front of the sign and were officially in Big Bend. On the way to our campsites we took a 2.2 mile hike (round trip) called Grapevine Hills Trail. When we got back to our cars we ate lunch in the car and started driving to our campsites. We decided to go on another hike. This one was a 1.7 mile hike (round trip) called Santa Elena Canyon Trail which was alongside a river. Once we got to the end of the hike we were all hot so we decided to get in the river. We were in the water for about twenty minutes then we went back to the cars. Once we were at the cars we finally drove to the campsite. We got there at around 6:00 p.m. We set up the tents ate burgers. After dinner the kids were playing on a big rock on the campsite and the adults were cleaning up dinner and stalking around the fire. At around 9:30 we got ready for bed and went to sleep.

March 30th

Today was our first breakfast at the campsite and we had breakfast tacos. I put eggs, chicken sausages, and cheese on mine. After breakfast we went on a 4.8 mile round trip hike called the Lost Mine Trail. It was really hard but it was ok in the end because there was a really beautiful view at the top where we had a picnic lunch. When we got back the kids did an easter egg hunt and the parents relaxed. When everybody finished the hunt we hung out then went to Chisos Mountains Lodge (a restaurant) to get an afternoon snack. We came back and had hot dogs and sausages for dinner. We all had s’mores around the campfire then the kids played statues in the park and the parents hung out. We all went to bed at around 9:30 and everyone sad that we were leaving the next morning.

March 31st

When we ate breakfast the next morning we had cereal and donuts. We were all sad that we were leaving Big Bend. We made sure that we left no trash, packed up our tents, and left Big Bend. When we passed the big “Big Bend” sign on the way out we all waved Big Bend goodbye.
