Cut Down Screen Time at Restaurants
We all get it. Sometimes kids just can't sit still or quiet when we head out to a restaurant. Handing over your phone or bringing along ipads to the restaurant are easy ways to ensure quiet children and a peaceful meal. But, is it quality family time? Is there a better way? Our family has several ways to enjoy a quality meal together at a restaurant without screen time. Here are a few of our favorites.
Uno - Everyone loves to play Uno. Throw this small stack of cards in your purse or pocket and that waiting time before the food comes out will be over before you know it. It doesn't take up much room at the table and just about anyone out of a high chair can join in the fun.
Bananagrams - This fun game might take up a bit more room at the table but it is one of our family favorites. Easy to carry in it's little banana shaped pouch. This game draws inspiration from scrabble but without the messy scoring system or need for a game board.
Tic-Tac-Toe - You don't even have to remember to bring anything for this one. Just ask the waitress for a piece of paper and a pen or two. Or use the kids menu if they have one. The hardest part will be reminding yourself not to win every game when your kids are still young.
Heads Up: I know. You are saying "You said to cut down on screen time!". But, this is family quality screen time. This phone app is basically charades mixed with Taboo. One person holds the phone to their forehead facing the family. The family tries to get the person holding the phone to guess the word displayed on the phone without saying that word. Great for louder restaurants and outdoor seating. Maybe not the best for loud families in quiet restaurants!
These are just a few. Do you have fun ways to engage as a family when eating out?
