Doodles
A month ago, our family adopted a puppy! Our previous dog passed away last year at the age of 16, so it has been a very long time since we’ve had a puppy in the house. I wanted to share our experience with our puppy’s breeder.
Our pup Jojo is a Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a Poodle (a Bernedoodle!). There are a lot of reasons why we fell in love with this combination breed, so set out to find a reputable breeder. We considered a lot of factors, but very high on the list was staying away from “puppy mills” and instead focusing on people that bred dogs they loved, instead of as a profession or a puppy mill.
We ended up getting Jojo from a woman named Becky (her home business is called Snickersdoodles). As the name suggests, she breeds puppies that are crossed with poodles. While most of their litters are goldendoodles or labradoodles, from time to time they have a littler of Bernedoodles as well.
Becky doesn’t take pre-orders for dogs. Instead, when they have a litter (and only after the litter is born), you can put your name on the waiting list for one of the dogs. She separates the list by those who want girl dogs vs boy dogs, and your spot on the list is based on how fast you contact her once the litter is born. She sends an email a week with pictures and tons of advice, but you aren’t sure what dog is going to be yours. Because the list is in order; when the big day comes, you show up to her home at the time she tells you to, interact with the litter, pick the puppy you want and go home! We took the kids with us for the “pick and go,” and our whole family had a blast playing with the puppies and selecting the one that seemed to fit us best.
Becky cares a lot, and is super communicative over email and text. Whether it be about food, training, health, or just general puppy matters, she is a great resource and always available to talk.
