Making Money as a Teenager

July 30, 2018 | by Rajal | 3 Minute Read

Video games…clothes…technology…there is so much out there that kids want. The only problem is, kids don’t have a lot of money and parents aren’t always going to pay for the new Xbox game or the latest trend. Sure kids get money for their birthdays and holidays like Christmas, but that will only last them so long.

Thoughts on Teenagers and Money, by Shivani…

I recently bought a new phone and I saved and earned all of the money myself. I decided to start saving up in December of 2017. My parents said that I wasn’t allowed to use my previous savings so I had to get 800 dollars myself somehow. Before I knew it Christmas came around and I got a good amount of money to start my fund.

In January, I realized that the only time I get money is during Christmas and my birthday, I had so come up with other ways to earn money or else it would take me forever to get my new phone. I came up with lots of ideas and was able to save up enough and get my phone in June.

A couple of weeks after I had this realization my mom found out that my little brothers science fair project was due in a week and he hadn’t started it. My mom told me that if I did the project with him she would pay me. So I did. I spent my whole weekend with my brother helping him do his project. Everything from doing the experiment to making the poster to practicing the presentation. You may not have the same exact opportunity but make sure to ask your parents if they have any big jobs for you. Especially stuff that they don’t wanna do, because they will give you a lot money if you do the stuff they don’t want to do for them. Allowances are also a really great way to get money from your parents. Just make sure to ask them about it and I’m sure they will come up with something you can do for them.

Another great way to make money is babysitting. You do have to be a little bit older to do this but it is a really great way to earn money, especially if you have neighbors with younger kids. If you are a little bit younger you can also babysit while the parents are still home. It is a great help to the kid’s parents because you are taking care of them so the parents can get some house work done. Babysitting can also be really fun and entertaining.

As much as chores and babysitting helped my cause the biggest thing was the business that I started. It took me a pretty long time to come up with an idea but the trick is to do something that you really like to do. Over the past few months I have been selling these scrapbook like cards to my friends, family, and teachers. I like it so much that now even after I’ve bought my phone I am continuing my business and starting an Etsy shop for it. Selling homemade products like soap and cosmetics or crafts is a great way to make money. Lemonade stands and bake sales are also a great way to make money and it’s a great thing to do with friends.

These are just a couple of ways to make money as a kid but there are tons of other ways that you can come up with or find online. I think learning to make money as a kid helps responsibility when it comes to spending money, and it creates a sense of self achievement. It is also a productive way to spend time as a kid. Hopefully these ideas were inspiring and helpful.
