Netflix Movie Review: Sing Street
I try to see as many movies as I can, but it is just impossible (and expensive!) to completely keep up. One movie I missed in the theater but was able to catch on Netflix was SING STREET.
Set in 1980’s Dublin the story focuses on 14 year old Connor. His parents are on the verge of divorce and have pulled his brother from college and him from his school forcing him to enroll in public school in order to save money. Connor spots Raphina one day after school and asks her to be in the music video for his band in order to impress her. The minor problem being that he doesn’t yet have a band. Connor acts quickly and puts together a band with some friends.
The characters are really funny, especially Connor’s older brother Brendan. Their relationship is the kind I think we all wish we had with a sibling, a bit teasing but mostly lovingly supportive. There is such a sweetness to the relationship between Raphina and Connor. It initially starts as Connor crushing on a girl that appears out of his league, but the truth is that they are good for each other and you really want them to figure that out. The music is fantastic! The originals that the band plays as well as the hits that brought me back to the 80s. This movie left me with the same happy and hopeful feeling I got from PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, also an excellent film I caught on Netflix.
