NSWK (Not Sufficient With Kids) Stuff to Watch Now on Netflix
I sorta love the summer and early fall when there aren’t any new episodes of my usual shows on. It gives me a chance to scroll Netflix rather than my DVR after my kids have gone to bed. This year I discovered the following shows and movies, admittedly I was late to the game on a couple, but was still thoroughly entertained.
THE INCREDIBLE JESSICA JAMES
I loved this movie! It’s not your typical rom-com, but the characters are so charming and they feel so real. Jessica Williams stars as a struggling New York playwright that is having a hard time after a breakup. She gets set up with Boone, played by Chris O’Dowd, who is also struggling with his recent divorce. They don’t fit the stereotypical road to romance but I rooted for them.
OZARK
I love a dark drama and I really love when there is murder and drug lords involved. I also love Jason Bateman. As a fan of BLOODLINE, also on Netflix, this show about a family fleeing to the Ozarks to launder money in order to stay on the right side of the drug lord threatening them totally appealed to me. I can’t wait for season 2.
THE GET DOWN
LOVE this show. It is a fictional account of the very real start of hip hop in the Bronx in the late ‘70’s.
LOVE
This comedy will totally make you uncomfortable, but will also make you laugh. The two main characters are so dysfunctional you want to just shake them, but they have an odd chemistry and the dialogue is sharp and witty.
BLACK MIRROR
Oh man, this show is messed up! In the same vein as The Twilight Zone things are never what they seem. Every episode is stand alone and features surprising guest stars like Jon Hamm, Hayley Atwell, and Bryce Dallas Howard. I somehow started watching out of order and saw the episode featuring Bryce Dallas Howard first. The premise of the episode is that everyone is rated from 1-5 stars by everyone they meet as well as on social media. Those with higher ratings live literal better lives because they have access to apartments, jobs, and places within society that those with lower ratings are not allowed. The main character starts out with 4 stars and is hoping that by attending a wedding of a friend with a higher rating it will give her an opportunity to boost her own rating and she will be granted a lease on a luxury apartment.
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE
Funny, smart, and insightful. This show follows a group of students of color at a fictional Ivy League college and how they deal with social injustice, cultural bias, and misguided activism.
Happy watching!
