Sports Mom
When my two baby girls were still little bundles of pink I had dreams of sparkling dresses and dance classes. I myself was a tomboy so getting sucked into glittery Girl World seemed pretty awesome. Well, doesn’t life always throw you curveballs?
My pretty pink princesses are still pretty girly, but they have decided that while wearing giant bows in their swinging ponytails they are going to kick butt on the basketball court, soccer field, or in the pool. I have learned that my girls are not alone and I have learned how much I love being a sports mom, not to mention that the moms from “Dance Moms” scare the crap out of me. My favorite three things are:
- THE OTHER SPORTS MOMS- The ladies that sit in the stands with me have become my best friends and my girls’ biggest cheerleaders. My daughters now have the full force of all of us screaming our hearts out for them. They get hugs and consolation from all of us when disappointment inevitably comes. And I get to celebrate the successes of more than just my two girls, there are so many amazing kids for me to root for!
- THE ATHLETE CAMARADERIE- I have watched an entire soccer team run from the bench and field to make sure my youngest was ok after a particularly messy fall. I have watched my oldest get a pep talk, hugs, and shoulder massage from a teammate/competitor/friend before a big race and then watched that friend pull her out of the pool because she left all her energy in the pool. I have seen groups of all ages that are members of the team pile on each other when relaxing and cheer each other on. It is beautiful and my heart grows each time.
- THE GROWTH OF MY GIRLS- I have watched my girls set goals for themselves then figure out exactly what they need to do to achieve those goals. I have never been as good at anything as my girls are at the sports they play. I am in awe of the hard work and determination of all the athletes I regularly cheer for and they inspire me to run a little bit farther on the rare occasion that I actually lace up. I will forgive them for their mocking of our power walks not being a real workout.
My girls are very lucky to have coaches that also nurture them while pushing them. They love swimming with the Circle C Select and Circle C Seals swim teams, playing basketball with Austin Youth Basketball, and playing soccer with Lonestar Soccer. I am forever grateful to them!
