Weight Loss Goals

It’s that time of year. It’s January 1st and we are coming up with our New Years Resolutions. Most of them revolve around being a better person and the dreaded loosing weight. I think I have that resolution EVERY year.

The first step is setting a goal. For me, it helps to make small, achievable goals. I start out with a goal of loosing 5 pounds. I probably need to loose 10-15 pounds, but for me, that is an intimidating number. How am I going to loose 15 pounds? And by the time I’ve lost 7 or 8, I’ve lost motivation to continue because it’s taking so long to attain that goal.

Loosing 5 pounds is reasonable and I know I can do that. For me, It’s all about eating smaller portions. For the most part, we eat pretty healthy in our house. I make dinner 5-6 nights a week and always try to incorporate a vegetable and a protein. One thing that I’ve found that helps is eating on a salad plate instead of a dinner plate. I guess it’s sort of mental game I play with myself. I can fill up a salad plate and know that I’m eating a full meal and don’t need seconds. When I use a dinner plate and fill up half of it, I think I’m not eating enough and go for a second round.

Afternoon snacks are tough especially when my kids come home from school and have one. Having a cup of tea in the afternoon helps curb my cravings to eat sugary or salty snacks with them. I put a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in my tea which fulfills my sweet craving.

When it comes to exercise, I try to go to the gym a few times a week, but it doesn’t always happen, because let’s face it, I’m lazy. I try to incorporate walking with friends but with cedar season in full bloom, I am trapped indoors.

The days when I don’t get around to exercising, I’ve got these few tricks to fall back on. I’m looking forward to loosing those first 5 pounds. Good luck with your new years resolutions!
